Help the Pender Island Community Farmland Acquisition Society
The Pender Island Community Farmland Acquisition Project (PICFAPS) is a registered society, formed in 2009, with a vision of a farmland trust to be held in perpetuity for the benefit of the Pender Island community. The benefits include enhancing local food security by supporting the production of island-grown healthy food through sustainable farming practices, while protecting the environment and providing opportunities for food-related education and research.
With consultation and assistance from The Land Conservancy and Farm Folk/City Folk Community Farms Program for BC, and based upon diverse models of many established community farms in our province, PICFAPS is shaping a vision that reflects the needs and interests of Pender Island. Since their first meetings in early 2009, the organization has grown in numbers and recieved enthusiastic endorsement and support of PICA, the PI Farmers’ Institute, the PI Women’s Institute, the PI Elementary School and the PI Organic Community Garden Society.
If you would like to join PICFAPS, member meetings are held the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 7-9 pm in the Lounge of the Community Hall on Pender Island.

Hey ‘fishbags’: Whales are worth seeing — from a distance
By Maclean Kay, Times Colonist
There are words you use out loud — especially in anger — I can’t print here. It’s a shame, because these words accurately describe certain unpleasant individuals and behaviour. For the sake of this column, let’s substitute the word “fishbag.”
Last week, my parents took my wife and me boating. Just off Otter Bay on Pender Island, we encountered a massive pod of killer whales. There were about five other boats in the vicinity, but only one stuck out. To the boaters we witnessed following the whales from less than three metres: you, my friends, are fishbags.
Full disclosure: After the pod passed, we were approached by a zodiac from Strait Watch. We were on the wrong side of the whales — you should avoid being between the pod and the shore. To get out of their way (good) we headed to the shore side (bad) rather than open water.
Sunday Market at Morning Bay Vineyard
Come on up to the Morning Bay Vineyard, Pender Island this Sunday from 12-3. Taste some great Pender Wines, and shop for preserves & bread from Gulf Islands Gourmet, art, t-shirts and cards from Amy Heggie, jewellry from Val and chair massages from Trish Mackinnon.
Island Vittles be there too – with homemade foccacia sandwiches. Sooo good.
